New Moon & Astrology for March

Pisces New Moon

February 27th, 4:45 pm PST – New Moon at 9 Pisces

The New Moon in Pisces gives us the opportunity to gather ourselves internally, pausing amid the tumultuous seas of change, and to tune in to what is essential in our lives. Pisces, as the last sign of the zodiac, looks over the past, and asks, what needs attention or completion?, before new beginnings takes place.

Pisces represents being stirred in the watery depths of the collective unconscious. It embodies the transcendent, the creative, the fertility of the deep subconscious and imaginative realms. Pisces highlights how we are not separate, but live within the feeling states of each other, our community, and the country. It lets us feel how we are all linked together in this interrelated sacred mysterious cosmos. Pisces calls us to remember how we mirror each other, and how creativity grows from spending time in these watery depths. This sign embodies the dreaming self, where the mysteries of creation surface into ideas, music, and arts. Pisces is the ocean of human emotions and feelings, the storehouse of humanity’s pains, joys, deceptions, and illuminations. How are we navigating these seas? Go deeper, get to the essence.

During the New Moon in Pisces, Saturn, Mercury, the North Node, and Neptune all conjunct in Pisces. When Mercury is in conjunction with Saturn, our mind and communications are asked to be focused. Saturn applies pressure to bring organization and discipline to our thinking and ideas, and to tell the truth. This is difficult in watery Pisces which carries all sides of truth, fish swimming in different directions, some wanting to create a new imagined future, and some heading to redo the past. The North Node in Pisces conjunct Neptune describes what is important now to nurture and grow, that’s empathy and the imaginative powers of the deeper soul, to dream up a new future. It calls us to pay attention to our dreams, to watch for deception, to realize our interconnectedness. Jupiter in Gemini can be scattered, distracted with bits and pieces of information. Like a windy day that scatters the leaves, Jupiter in Gemini creates difficulty in focusing and completing one thing. Key words, then, during this time is to slow so to deepen our insight, especially as Jupiter moves to its last square to Saturn during June.

Affirmation for New Moon in Pisces

“I slow down to honor my inner depths of feeling and my imagination, with the intention to remember and record my dreams. The Collective soul is speaking to us with important messages, for we are coming to and creating new beginnings.”

Mars in Cancer is now direct, being retrograde since December 6th

Do you feel an a sudden breakthrough or forward movement? Has your inner depths of being been stirred and activated, and now things are beginning to clear. Do we see collective action forming?

Mars in Cancer and the Moon in Capricorn are squaring Chiron and Venus in Aries, pointing out the wounded masculine. With Mars, the masculine, (the active, assertive archetypal principal) expressing itself through the subjective inner world of the watery realms (Cancer), this brings forth impulses and reactions from the unconscious. This is an opportunity to learn about our deeper programming, our inner judgments, that can be debilitating, inflating, or we might be remembering forgotten parts of the self that bring energy and vitality. We can learn of our own personal inner masculine or yang principal, and how it functions, or doesn’t function, in moving us toward what we want or intend. We can now observe this authoritative masculine (Mars opposite Moon in Capricorn), the wounded masculine, (Mars squaring Chiron in Aries) playing out in our society and culture, in the collective.

All three of these planets, Mars, Venus, and the Moon are in signs of their “debilitation” with Mars in the sign of its “Fall”. (Both Mercury, and Jupiter are also in signs of debilitation). Only Neptune is in its own sign, which creates a strength in its expression, while these 5 other planets struggle in signs that don’t support their essential qualities. What does that mean? For one, it means that we are in a particularly Neptunian time, overwhelm, confusion, spin, deception, illusion, yet can be highly imaginative, creative, and/or with mindfulness, feeling into the greater spiritual and unitive consciousness in which all events take place. When the 5 planets are in signs that don’t channel their qualities, we can have break down, chaos and difficulty maintaining clarity.

As Mars goes direct it squares Venus in Aries, February 23rd, for the following week, there can be challenges and/or defining moments in relationship. What was one way in relationship has been turned around and reversed. Aggression and independence in relationship creates tension with a deeper urge that seeks emotional belonging. Now we are seeing the USA’s collective wound around the masculine, meaning that we are seeing a very deep wound from our foundation around assertion, independence, and self centered domination. We can witness the feminine (Venus in Aries) standing up to the wounded expression of the masculine (Mars in Cancer square Chiron). We can imagine with Mars squaring Chiron, the wounding of the collective masculine, includes trauma and distress from a lack of emotional integration and nourishment, a long history which has defined its shape. This, over the last generations, has been changing, while we work out the last ruminants of imbalance.

Mars is trining Saturn in Pisces as it goes direct. Saturn in Pisces seeks to give logical and structured form to the deep, (Pisces) to the imagined, to the inner fertility of the human psyche. Mars activates it with energy, and direction. What are we wanting and needing? Can we be clear now with our intentions and self realization?

We can now bring more clarity to what took place during the period from December 6th to February 23rd, (when Mars was retrograde. We are now in “post shadow phase” for insight and integration). What Has been reviewed? What actions did we take that needed to be redone during this period? What deeper insights did we get about our unconscious impulses, fears, and vulnerabilities? How have we been trying to maintain what we should be (Moon in Capricorn)? How have we moved ourselves forward?

Mars in Cancer squares Chiron in Aries, through March – Sensitive reactions respond to the collective wound of aggression. For individuals, the next month gives us insight in to the deeper unconscious patterns of reaction. What an opportunity to wake up into greater consciousness and choice based creative living and interacting! Watch what triggers you. To be triggered and to seek its deeper cause is the transformative passage before us. What values and beliefs shape our lives? And what actions will we take based on those values? What gives meaning to our lives? “Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves.” Carl Jung

Venus in Aries goes retrograde on March 1st, Mercury retrogrades in Aries on March 14th.

Celestial Events for March

Feb 27 – New Moon at 9 Pisces – Pisces is the great body of the seas, and it represents the power of our imagination, our ability to empathize, our spiritual and transcendent connections. It is beyond limits and boundaries, in the rhythmic yin yang of in and out, of past and future, of imaginative and real. This is a sensitive New Moon with deep with feelings.

Venus retrograde

Mar 1 – Venus goes retrograde at 10 Aries (to 24 Pisces, direct on April 12) – When Venus goes retrograde it is time to review our values, reflecting on how those values sustain our life path. It is a time of global review in terms of our values, diplomacy and quality of relationship with others. What’s been distorted, undervalued, what deeper essential qualities have been forgotten? What’s unfinished? Are there issues that need healing, clearing or repairing? It can also be a time to celebrate relationships that are thriving. (Venus goes retrograde once every 18 months)

Venus will retrograde back over the first 10 degrees of Aries into the last 6 degrees of Pisces (10 Aries to 24 Pisces). This retrograde period highlights a review of the new beginnings and changes we have been going through since the last week in January (pre-shadow time). The focus is on, does this match our values? What kind of relations are we having or wanting to have with others? As we relate with others, what does it touch in us? Who triggers us, and who do we admire who embody the courageous spirit than we desire (Venus in Aries)?

On March 27, Venus dips back into Pisces, in the sign of her exaltation, where her influence strengthens, promoting a reflection on the qualities of empathy, compassion, and imagination. Being the last sign of the zodiac, we can once again review how we want to cultivate new beginnings through reviewing our interrelatedness with each other and the earth. Have we left something out in our forward movement? What is the state of our ability to have empathy, compassion and imagination?

Check out where 10 Aries to 24 Pisces falls in your chart. This area, and the themes of this house, are up for review, review of the quality of interrelatedness with others, for how we live out our essential values in this area.

Mercury retrograding with Venus retrograde

Most interesting and synchronistic, is that Mercury will retrograde in this same area from March 14th to April 7, covering the degrees 9 Aries to 26 Pisces. (This hasn’t taken place for at least last 100 years) This is a deep dive into redo and restart what has began, and what needs greater review, in terms of what is being completed. Following on the heels of the Mars retrograde, quick forward movement initiated in December, January and February are continuing to be slowed for greater inspection. This time then indicates a powerful reset for our hearts and minds, for finances, for the quality of being with ourselves and each other, and how we effectively communicate.

Pisces energy and the north node in Pisces are emphasized as Neptune gets ready to leave Pisces, where it’s been for the last 14 years. How can we as a people move into a more compassionate standst and perception as the world enters a very powerful transformative moment? (For more on this join Susan’s monthly Astrology talk, March 7th Friday, 9:30 am, recordings included.)

For the USA chart the Venus and Mercury retrograde take place at the very bottom of the chart, both crossing the Nadir 3 times. This is our deep foundations. What are our foundations as a country, what our values that sustain us and how are we thinking and communicating those values to each other and to the world at large. The USA progressed Moon is also highlighting this area. Mar 2 – Sun at 12 Pisces squares Jupiter in Gemini – philosophical reflections. Watch going to extremes or excess on big projects, inflation of purpose.

Mar 3 – Mercury into Aries – Mercury leaves dreamy, illusory Pisces. The planet of communication becomes more direct, quick and sharp

Mar 11 – Mercury conjunct Venus at 8 Aries – harmonious communications in direct ways

Mar 13 – Total Lunar Eclipse, full Moon – at 24 Virgo, 10:55 pm – high tides and full emotions, the exact alignment of earth, sun and moon. This eclipse may show us where we are too controlling, critical, analytical, or too perfectionistic in our lives, as the Moon is conjunct the south, not the north node. It may reveal our procrastination, or where we identify as victim or savior, and the need to release that way of being. Under this eclipse we might embrace the gift of Virgo, it’s grounded, discerning perception, that continually allows us to refine our awareness and mindfulness. The gift of being true to ourselves with kindness.

Stay grounded, not caught up in the mists of overwhelm or confusion that this potent combo may bring. 29 degrees is called an ‘Anaretic’ degree where situations are breaking down and dissolving, and especially in Pisces, where waters dissolve form. A good day for completion and transition. Be thoughtful of the themes of boundaries and identity.

Mar 20 – Spring Equinox – The Sun into Aries – New beginnings! Born out of immersion in the collective feeling realms of Pisces. Restate your intention for the year ahead. The rising Sun at dawn finds its East point and days equal night, light equals dark. The light grows longer each day. Whatever calls for boldness and initiative grows, even as Venus and Mercury are retrograde in Aries, bringing us more deeply into our authenticity, our calling. Starts and stops may continue and review strengthens our mission.

Mar 22 – The Sun conjuncts Venus retrograde at 2 Aries – Sun Venus ‘Cazimi’, in the heart of the Sun, when the Sun and Venus are exactly conjunction (within 17 minutes of a degree). This strengthens the virtues of Venus, love, artistic engagement, abundance and appreciation of the beauty of each other and this world. Aries brings a pioneering and bold approach to these Venusian themes.

Mar 24 – The Sun conjuncts Mercury retrograde at 4 Aries – The Sun Mercury Cazimi – brilliant ideas, passionate and inspiring communications. Bold and pioneering ideas.

Mar 26 – Mars at 21 Cancer squares Chiron at 21 Aries – tending to the collective wounds of the masculine. How does sensitivity and the longing for emotional belonging integrate with the wounds of aggression? Watch for emotional needs promoting action and assertiveness to understand where to bring more consciousness.

Mar 27 – Venus retrogrades into Pisces & conjuncts Neptune (and North Node) – a time for reflections on how we treat each other. Spiritual renewal, empathy and compassion, rather than south node Virgo criticalness, judgement and perfectionism. This is the power of unconditional love, of imaginative, creative forces to reshape the world as it moves into a powerful transformative time. Watch for the lower manifestation of this energy as it can be used for manipulation through deception and illusion, or through victim, martyr, savior themes. It calls us to connect with the greater spiritual truths of our oneness.

Mar 28-29 – Venus rises as a morning star – When Venus rises as a Morning star – March 27 –political situations are known to be unstable & leaders insecure, often it is a time when failure or resignation of leaders takes place.

Mar 29 – Partial Solar Eclipse at 9 Aries – Solar Eclipses in Aries open the door to bold new beginnings, unexpected openings to change, new experiences and transformations. This eclipse can ignite passions to take a stand, or initiate movement. A day to feel into our courage and boldness, inviting newness to come into our lives. Birth and releasing the old, renewal.
