Astrology for October

In the time of Libra, there is a pause as darkness begins to lengthen and we reorient ourselves to the shifting season. The symbolism of the scales reminds us to take time, to find our balance, to adjust to the season’s turning, as the leaves fall in flaming color exposing the bare branches.

Jupiter is high in the sky in the early morning, to the left of dramatic Orion crowned by the Taurus constellation and the Pleiades. Venus rises before sunrise close to the horizon, and will soon disappear as morning star in late October.

As much as the Libra time of year calls for finding balance and peace, we feel the intensity of this time, especially since Mars entered Scorpio on September 21st, squaring underworld God, Pluto, on the 24th. We witness power plays and feel the underbelly of human behavior, those attributes we usually keep in check. The energy of Libra calls for balance, reflection, justice, while the intensity of Mars in Scorpio can activate old vengeances.

We notice this energy moving through the collective.

All the while the Scorpio energy sets the stage to encounter an edge and transform ourselves, bringing deeper life and death issues up to the surface. It highlights endings and beginnings. It electrifies the days with an edginess while the Libra energy brings in the feminine energy, seeking an objectivity to witness where we are and to lean toward justice.

During October, the Aries Vortex aligns tightly, also intensifying the atmosphere. This formation signals dramatic shifts in culture and politics, a collective restlessness that breaks old patterns and demands renewal. It highlights disruption. It brings out old themes of dominance and power, activating an awakening, calling on us to participate in a new birth laboring to take place.

In our own lives, this same alignment presses us to transform through endings and new beginnings, pressing us to initiate something fresh, to step beyond the familiar and imagine new forms of expression, embodying Aries vitality and possibility.

The Aries Full Moon calls us out, initiates movement and action, dares us to be bold. As a SuperMoon it appears slightly larger and is closer to the Earth in its orbit than usual, It will appear 6.6% larger and 13% brighter than an average Full Moon. With its Aries energy is can stimulate impulsiveness and reaction, but also gets us going, births new beginnings and stirs us with fiery passions. What is it you are wanting? Where do you need to take an action?

Paired with the Libra Sun, this is a dynamic cardinal pair of activating energy. How can we be paused in conscious observation and yet still jump into bold actions? I am reminded of what my yoga teacher, Karen Zelin, said, “to be transformed by how we attend to things”. The thoughtful attending is Libra, and Aries initiates the birth of deeper awareness, which is embodied through transformative action, especially as the Aries planet, Mars, is now in the transformative sign of Scorpio.

This Aries Full Moon with the Sun at 14 Libra conjuncts the USA Saturn, representing the president and our role in the the world community, setting off the potent t-square in the USA chart of Saturn opposing Chiron, both squaring the USA Sun. Who are we on the world stage now? Will we show the Libra Sun Saturn diplomacy, or will we act out the impulsive, assertive Aries that upsets any equilibrium? We are at a crucial crossroads of a transforming identity for our country which will unfold over the next couple years.

The sign Libra calls our attention to the quality of our interactions, to our aesthetic sensibilities, to how we bring beauty into our lives, and what beauty means to each of us.

In John O’Donohue’s book ‘Beauty’, he quotes Frederick Turner, “Beauty is the highest integrative level of understanding and the most comprehensive capacity for effective action. It enables us to go with, rather than against, the deepest tendency or theme of the universe.”

This New Moon activates the Aries Vortex formation, creating a square to Pluto, setting off the tension to transform what has become status quo. At the same time, this New Moon forms a ‘Finger of God’ formation, or ‘Yod’ with the Saturn Neptune conjunction and Uranus, marking a crossroads point where we are called to be as present as possible to the moment, as we decide our direction forward. The New Moon is also in a grand square with Jupiter, Chiron and Pluto. How can we move forward with healing instead of overdoing into wounding?
