Astrology for August

August begins with the 1st quarter Moon in deep feeling Scorpio, as the Sun moves through expressive outgoing Leo. Inner refection and depth, to outer expression and embodiment. This creates the portal to August, with Mercury retrograde conjunct the Sun, asking for reflection. Mars, finishing up it’s sojourn in Virgo, pushes to get the practical projects complete, even while Mercury retrograde may be complicating the task.

Without a doubt the outstanding feature of the month is the Aries Vortex alignment; Uranus in Gemini trining Pluto in Aquarius, both sextiling the once in 36 year conjunction of Saturn and Neptune, now uniquely in Aries. As these outer planets shift signs we experience major shifts in our lives and culture, in our politics and systems. Adding to this, that the outer planets are in perfect alignment to each other, ‘the Aries Vortex’, with their energy channeling through the 1st degree of Aries at the Saturn Neptune conjunction, we are indeed in a very rare time.

Here’s the chart for August 1st.

How might this be correlating with individual activity at this time? We may find ourselves pulled into a current of dynamic, initiatory energy that calls for action, self-definition, and courageous individuation. Something is wanting to be born, as something is ready to be released. This is a major turning point time that we are all involved in, personally and collectively. It pushes us into the need to break away from the known, to confront the deepest dregs of our complexes, or habituated patterns, searching for clarity in the foundational conditioning and belief systems that have promoted old ways of being in order to transform.

We may find ourselves making rapid decisions, starting projects spontaneously, and choosing to walk where we haven’t dared before. This formation can inspire courageous, pioneering leadership, as well as initiating creative endeavors, but it will also test our ability to handle conflict, to face and deal with our own resistance to change, focus, and discipline in order to create new structures in our lives. The Aries energy, bold and independent, asks us to look at where we shape ourselves and our actions through others’ opinions of us, and demands a stripping away of false identities. This vortex heightens the archetype of the warrior, one who forges her own authentic identity.

The Aries energy, as the spring of all new beginnings, does not wait for consensus or external validation. Aries always pushes us right to the edge, often bringing a confrontation with fear, particularly fear of rejection, failure, or loss of control. Aries demands that we act anyway. It cultivates our courage. It pushes us toward independence which can clash with intimacy or reveal our co-dependencies. Aries teaches that connection must come after the self has been claimed, not before. Aries is the birth of self-recognition, often finding our shape and identity in the alchemical vessel of conflict or courageous choice.

When Saturn and Neptune come together in a conjunction, (especially as the funnel for the Uranus Pluto disruptive and transformative trine) we may experience a profound tension, and eventual synthesis, between structure (Saturn) and dissolution (Neptune); between reality and dream, between possibility and limitation. On the personal level, this calls to us to build something solid out of our ideals or imaginings.  Or, to accept what has felt challenging and adjust to slow step by step integration. Saturn demands discipline, boundaries, and realism; Neptune blurs lines, longs for merging, and calls us into states of surrender or spiritual imagination. We are in a time where illusions must be tested, and ideals either grounded or abandoned.

We may experience this as a crisis of faith or purpose, or we may find new purpose that asks for dedication and effort. We might be asked to confront where we’ve built our lives on fantasy. Do we finally want to take action? Or engage with acceptance? In the opposite polarity we might become aware of where we’ve become overly rigid and lost touch with inspiration or soul. Its gift to us is a time of spiritual maturing. The conjunction can bring up feelings of disillusionment, but it also opens the door to building a more meaningful reality, one where inner truth and outer structure are aligned. For artists, mystics, or seekers, this may be a breakthrough moment where disciplined practice allows us to give form to the ineffable.

The Aries Vortex offers us all a rite of passage, and is in fact, a collective right of passage, an initiation into a new way of being. The question is what values, what clarity of perception, will open the way into the new birth? Will the Saturn Neptune conjunction strip away the personal and collective illusions that have formed our culture and ground, and instead, provide a new clarity of perception?

As an astrologer, or someone who is interested in the unfolding cycles of archetypal energies defined by the planets and signs, we now watch what is taking place in the collective, in our politics, in our society. Where are we seeing this check (Saturn) on illusions and spin (Neptune)? What topics have arisen that fit this description? Where are we being called through disruption and the revealing of what has been hidden to imagination a new future for ourselves?
