Astrology for March

The night skies are brilliant and beautiful, with Sirius, the Dog Star, high in the south. Orion arched forward toward the West. Mars is high in the heavens to the southwest, and Venus has vanished until she reappears as evening star in May.

Saturn Uranus square

Through March we continue to experience the dynamic tension of the square between Uranus and Saturn. Uranus is the archetype of awakening, of breaking through, of change and visionary possibilities for each of us, for our country, and the world. It is the essence of mental creativity that moves through the greater collective field, the field of pure potentiality. Saturn holds tradition, and what has been the established ways of thinking, judging, and relating. Uranus activates the urge to change, to open to new perceptions of who we are and what is possible. It is the lightning flash that electrifies the air with new stimulations. Uranus brings disruption to the status quo, disruption to tradition, disruption to the accustomed ways we go about our lives. This aspect highlights restlessness, experimentation, and radical departures from the normal ways, rebelliousness, and contrariness. It wants to breakthrough stuck places, barriers, and old ways. It stirs things up and brings uncertainty as to outcomes, but encourages future visions of a broader way of being who we are and what’s possible for us.

Saturn wants stability, firm boundaries, and turns us inward to contemplate our situations, our interior landscape. It can build walls and separations as opposed to Uranus’s need for freedom. (Observe all the images of this opposition in politics and society at this time.) Saturn contracts our experience, often into malaise, doubt or resistance. And yet it is Saturn that can receive the new possibilities of Uranus and begin to build stable forms for the new to take shape. It can provide commitment and perseverance to grow what is new. In this square aspect there must be a shift in our consciousness to hold the new possibilities. This takes patience and consistency to cultivate. (Think of the changes you are ready to make in your life). Its outcome will be rewarding. Uranus and Saturn align in the fixed signs of Aquarius and Taurus, challenging our fixed concepts and our comfort zones, making it uncomfortable to continue in the same ways. It indicates our need to deepen and feel into what vision holds the creative possibilities for the next unfoldment of our gifts to emerge and seed the collective.

Questions to ask Ourselves

So we might ask ourselves, “How can I best step into the change that is being asked of me? What is being disrupted? And how does this offer me a new way of being? What old structures, judgments, fears, and obstructions are being challenged? Where am I feeling restless and in need of change? What mindset, behavior, or practice, can I cultivate to give grounding to this change? Where am I feeling discouragement, difficulty, and judgment as I seek to move into the future? How can I slow down and pay attention to the inner voice and the synchronicities of something larger guiding me? How can I take that leap of faith into the unknown so as to fulfill a vision that pulls at me?”

In the Collective

We can extend these themes of Saturn and Uranus to know that it is also moving through the collective, the society, and the culture. Within this tension of opposites, holding to what we know and stretching into the new, a crisis in consciousness is taking place. This crisis demands new solutions to our challenges, no going back, new solutions for Saturn in Aquarius, for community and equality, and for Uranus in Taurus, reverence for the Earth, for the intelligence and ecology of the Earth, and a revolution in our values. We are stretched with tension between the re-envisioning of community, our values of interrelatedness and equality, and the themes of individual freedom.

This time of year we experience the influence of Pisces.

As a mutable water sign Pisces links us to each other through loosening boundaries and highlighting the collective unconscious waters we swim in together. It’s mutable action dissolves the winter season so Spring can begin. We are sensitive to these transitional times. Our emotions are heightened. Our imaginative powers stirred. Under the Pisces Sun we may feel unmoored, floating, merged with the feelings within the collective, swayed by collective movements (think vaccinations, or election legitimacy). We may experience the rising tide of many diverse perceptions and opinions. For some of us, combining with this month’s Saturn Uranus square, we poignantly feel ourselves suspended between the old and the new. March 20th marks the turn as the Sun enters Aries, supporting energetic activity to initiate the new season. Our activity increases as we move out of the deep waters of Pisces.
