Astrology for May

‘Taurus’ by Susan Seddon Boulet

In the Taurus time of year, the gardens bloom, the leaves unfurl, the roses scent the air, the birds make their nests. We can feel more deeply into the ‘fixed Earth’ quality as the wisdom of nature that instructs us, holds us, carries us and bestows wisdom upon us. In this paradigm shift time, we can move away from the superficial description of Taurus as related to money, possessions, and stubborn resistance, and move into deeper contemplations of it’s meaning.

Celtic festival, Beltane, (also known as one of the 4 Cross Quarter fire festivals) honors this Taurus time of year, taking place on May 1st, midway between Spring equinox and Summer Solstice. “This was the celebration of the upwelling of life-force in full flower…Everything is going for it, growing into their full potential..” Palden Jenkins, Living in Time.

It’s up to us to we create a bridge to a new age, a new age which isn’t highlighting separation and being against others, but acknowledges the deep interrelatedness of all things. We can learn from nature, such as the incredible mycelium which links trees and plants, a powerful network of intelligence and communication. In this new paradigm, we honor the qualities of the feminine as equal and a balance to the masculine. The Earth and Water signs are redefined with a new reverence and wisdom.

Thomas Berry wrote, “A truly human intimacy with the earth and with the entire natural world is needed. …What is needed on our part is the capacity for listening to what the earth is telling us….Awareness of an all-pervading mysterious energy…seems to be the primordial experience of human consciousness.” We can rewrite the Taurian story to reflect a new kind of listening to the wisdom of the earth as teacher. Isn’t it interesting that in the tarot the Hierophant is the Taurus card and its attribute is listening? A Hierophant is “a person, especially a priest in ancient Greece, who interprets sacred mysteries or esoteric principles.

Carrying the Light

Jupiter and Uranus have conjuncted in Taurus on April 20. On May 13 the Sun conjuncts Uranus, and on May 18 the Sun conjuncts Jupiter. This movement of the Sun between Uranus and Jupiter is called, “carrying the light”. The Sun carries the light from Uranus to Jupiter, meaning that the Sun now weaves together their conjunction, once again.

Jupiter searches for meaning and at its highest form receives wisdom from the living intelligent field that surrounds us. Uranus is the Promethean spirit that brings what’s needed to humans from the Gods. Uranus’s feminine counterpoint is Urania, his great granddaughter. She is the goddess of astronomy and astrology, the muse of the stars, universal love, and philosophy.

When Jupiter and Uranus conjunct, we are encouraged to lean into the new possibilities, find new perspectives, break out of the status quo, envision greater meaning, create new mythic vision to lead us into new times where we return to see the living presence of earth and sky.

Jupiter expands, and increases what it touches. Uranus is revolution, rebellion, breaking out of the status quo.

All the student protests are manifestations of this energy.

What vision can each of us bring out now? Michael Meade talks about the importance of finding our inner genius which exists in the deep soul. Greg Braden speaks of connecting with our divinity, this force within us in order to restore the world and step into our greater inheritance.

The conjunction of Uranus and Jupiter is this moment in time for renewal, for expanding our vision for what it means to be human at this time. Below we see Uranus and Jupiter in their depiction in the Tarot. “How can we see with the new eyes of the Fool? How can we take hold of this moment to take up a new opportunity? How can we take a courageous leap into the new? A quantum leap? We stand before the possibility of a great breakthrough.”

Where in your life do you sense a breakthrough, or feel yourself at the edge of a different way of being? What gifts would you like to contribute at this time?
