Astrology for September

This morning the slender waning crescent Moon lured me outside at 5:30 am. Such a striking sky now in the early mornings! Mars arches its way lower to the east from bright Jupiter. Above Jupiter, slightly to the south, is red Aldebaran. While to the right and rising is Orion, stretched out and huge, below the Pleiades and the Taurus constellation. Sparkling and twinkling above the eastern horizon is the Dog Star, Sirius, following Orion, the hunter. This morning sky holds the the memory of ancient sky watchers beholding the mystery of star patterns, huddled around fires, weaving archetypal stories that still inform our deep psyches. Living in this intelligent, ordered, breathing cosmos. Check it out!!

The Sun in Virgo, New Moon in Virgo ushers us into September and the fall season

The month begins, with the New Moon in earthy mutable sign of Virgo. This is a time to gather and ground ourselves, reviewing where we have been and setting the stage for what might be next. Not only is mutable Virgo a time of transition from one season to another, but a gathering of planets in the mutable signs (Jupiter, Mars in Gemini, Saturn and Neptune in Pisces) speak also of these transitional times. In the zodiacal order of the signs, Virgo is that stage of personal refinement and attunement within ourselves on all levels, body, mind and soul. It is also the time of harvest, of reaping the fruits of our actions and the seeds we’ve tended over the year. What a perfect time to give ourselves space to contemplate the last 9 months, our particular journey, as well as our country’s journey.

Sept 2 – New Moon at 11 Virgo, 6:56 pm PDT – (opposing Saturn in Pisces and squaring Jupiter in Gemini – highlighting the mutable signs, change, transition, at a cross roads (Jupiter Saturn), setting the stage from summer to fall.

This New Moon highlights the critical turning point we are experiencing, as it opposes Saturn and squares Jupiter. In other words, it highlights the Saturn Jupiter square we are now in. This square will continue through June 2025. Personally, with the New Moon opposing Saturn, it’s important to find space for stillness and introspection. Saturn in Pisces pulls us more deeply into, not only the collective feeling spaces, but asks us to take time to feel into our own history. Pisces is the last stage of development before the renewal in Aries and new beginnings. Saturn in this sign seeks to gain insight into the layers of our psyche that need healing, and to give form and consciousness to our soul’s calling. It wants to give shape to creative, imaginative forces, to bring forth what has been hidden in the deep. It calls for us to be aware of the needs of the collective.

The New Moon square to Jupiter in Gemini emphasizes the use of words, of writing and learning, among diverse influences. It can bring a sense of confidence and optimism, as well as describe overdoing, taking on too much, spreading oneself too thin, and trying to be everything to everybody. While the square of Saturn to Jupiter demands a confrontation with excess, its tension seeks awareness in how to balance and find the right proportion between expansion and grounded centeredness.

This New Moon calls for heightening our consciousness in making decisions for the future, based on our reassessment of what we are now harvesting. What crossroads are we experiencing? What decisions do we need to make to tend to our own body, soul, and mind? What refinements of self and country are being called for?

Affirmation for New Moon in Virgo

“I bring my attention to practical matters that need attending too. I take time to care for my body and soul.”

More thoughts on the Jupiter Saturn square

With Jupiter squaring Saturn (from August 2024 through May 2025), We are at a crucial turning point, a decision making point, to what direction our future will take. This waxing square has developed from the conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn, the cycle unfolding from the conjunction in December 2020. Something is being born to lead us into a new future. This square marks the need for conscious choice in our direction. How do we want to grow? What needs to be seen and stabilized? What are our priorities? How do we want to interface with each other, with our own inner psyche? What kind of consciousness will we cultivate, both within ourselves and toward each other? As Leyla Rael and Dane Rhudyar write, in Astrological Aspects, “the waxing square…means the need for taking a stand, becoming committed, and acting out the commitment…Behind all more superficial choices, the waxing square as a turning point in an overall process,…presents the ‘choice’ between two basic qualities… courage and fear”.

Jupiter and Saturn reach their first square aspect. This is a time of testing in order to create a new foundation for what will evolve over the next 7 to 14 years.

Jupiter to square Saturn

This transitional, transformative time between old and new is not only described by the many planets in mutable signs, not only by the Jupiter Saturn square, but by two other planetary indicators, Pluto retrograding back into Capricorn for the last time, and the upcoming formation of the harmonious outer planet minor grand trine alignment, taking place now.

Pluto retrogrades back into Capricorn on Sept 1, until fully entering Aquarius on November 19th. From March 2023 to November 2024, Pluto has moved back and forth between Capricorn and Aquarius. It’s movement between the two signs marks the completion of one phase of breakdown and transformation to another phase of development. It highlights the theme of completion and entering a new phase of development.

Think about the changes that occurred while Pluto was in Capricorn. Pluto first entered Capricorn in 2008, finally fully in Capricorn in November 2008. As Pluto finally moves from Capricorn and into Aquarius it brings an intensification of Aquarian themes; innovation, community involvement and organization, future visioning and implementation, and technological development. Its archetypal process is to breakdown and expose what is not working in order to transform and rebirth the archetypal themes connected with the sign it’s moving through.

The other striking planetary alignment showing a dramatic shifting of themes toward a new future, with the potential power of breakthrough, is the upcoming minor grand trine of the outer planets.

The outer planets, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are beginning to align in the harmonious minor grand trine. Change and transformation move into a harmonious, rather than tensional, channeling through the form we give to our higher ideals. It also channels new forms through our empathy for each other and the earth. What ideals do we hold dear, and what vision will we carry forward to create our future? The alignment of outer transpersonal planets create a potent shift from the challenges of that last decade. How do we participate? What vision will carry us forward into this new time?

The warrior is in conflict with the mystic, the peace activist. Take time to sort out clarity. Better not to make important decisions today.

Sep 4 – Mars enters Cancer – Mars moves out of busy Gemini, where it juggles too many tasks, commitments, and actions, and into deep feeling Cancer. This is a more sensitive and empathetic time for the warrior within us. When Mars is in Cancer its dilemma is how to assert and express itself through the energy of Cancer with its need for emotional bonding and nurturing. Key to working with this time is for us to be aware of our deeper feelings and needs, especially if we are reacting to others defensively.

Going to excess, or taking on too much. Watch over expansion. Watch getting too spread out with pleasant obligations.

Sept 17 – Partial Lunar Eclipse Full SuperMoon at 25 Pisces/Sun in Virgo, 7:35 pm PDT – The Harvest Moon

This full Moon is another SuperMoon, meaning it’s closer to the earth in its orbit. There will be two more SuperMoons, Oct 17, Nov 15. The closest SuperMoon will be on October 17th.

This full Moon carries a strong feeling energy. We may feel more sensitized, more attuned to subtleties in the energy field, or with other people. The Pisces full moon is the poet’s Moon. We tune into the imaginative realms and experience the mystic’s view. Bring out Rumi and Hafez, Mary Oliver or Denise Levertov! When the Moon is in Pisces we can be more sensitive to the suffering in the collective, or to the needs of the world.

The full Moon passes partially through the shadow of the earth, creating a partial lunar eclipse, bringing our attention to the shadow qualities of humanity, that which we don’t normally attend to. Perhaps during this time the protests over the Gaza Israel war will intensify.

The Pisces Virgo pairing of the full moon brings our attention to a time of transition, a phase is ending, a new season is coming. How might we attend to ourselves in completing what needs completing to prepare for a new season? This pair of signs represent being of service to spirit and body, refining our awareness, enlarging our view, and embodying a greater consciousness in day to day life.

The full Moon conjuncts Neptune in Pisces and greatly increases both our sensitivity and our imaginative possibilities. Under Neptune’s influence, we may be aware that illusion and ideals abound, finding it difficult to be objective. Or we may devote the day to our artistic pursuits, or to prayer and spiritual nourishment, enhancing our ability to see the interrelatedness of all life, as Neptune’s frequency is of unity consciousness. With the Sun and Moon aligning with the minor grand trine of the outer transpersonal planets, a kite formation is formed, (a grand trine with two sextiles to the Moon) signaling a turning point in applying practical measures to implement vital and transforming change, both personally or collectively

Partial Lunar Eclipse Full Moon in Pisces

Autumn Equinox

Fall Equinox, when day and night are equal. The Sun returns to the east point as it rises in the morning. Night begins to increase its length. Darkness falls as do the scarlet leaves, announcing the march to Winter. A brilliant show of letting go. This equinox chart shows the Sun entering Libra and the Moon in Gemini, highlighting the air signs, bringing much social interacting, sharing ideas, words and views. The Sun still highlights the kite formation, weaving into this fall season, the growth of the transformative powers. How might we imagination a transformed world and future? What level of consciousness will usher in the imaginative vision (Neptune) to lead us forward? Venus is in an exact square with Pluto, bringing our attention to the need to transform how we relate to each other. Think the Inanna myth, descending to the underworld in honor of the losses that the Goddess below has witnessed and grieved, in order that a rebirth can take place.

Sept 22 – Venus at 29 Libra squares Pluto in Capricorn – See above

Sept 22 – Venus enters Scorpio – Venus enters the deep, transformative sign of Scorpio. Here Venus meets others with intensity, with the ability to see deeper layers of others psyches. Relationships may reveal the deeper issues that need discussion. The potential for renewal.
