Planetary Alignments for 2022
2022, the year of the Water (Black) Tiger in Chinese astrology
Begins January 31st (February 1st in China), at the 2nd New Moon after the Winter Solstice
2022 is the year of the Water Tiger. Tiger is a powerful force, dynamic, passionate, and creative. We will witness activities during the year that are bold, dramatic and creating dynamic change. Tiger years are known for creating dramatic social change, introducing bold new ideas. Are you ready for big change in your life? Now is the year to ride that tiger, align with your vigor, courage and leadership. Tiger years are not timid and small scaled. Imagine the power and regality of the Tiger quick to leap into and become involved in big enterprises, both big successes and failures. The Water element of this year tempers the fierceness and impulsiveness of the Tiger, giving an openminded quality akin to the sign Aquarius, open to new ideas and experience. With his calmer nature Tiger is able to be more mindful and objective, humane and a revealer of truth.

- Nodes and Eclipses move into Taurus and Scorpio
- Jupiter in Pisces and into Aries

Venus retrograde – December 18 – January 28, 2022 26 – 11 Capricorn
This important transit begins our year, requiring inner self-reflection, allowing us to more fully embody, with clarity, our personal journey through the year. Venus retrograde is a time to focus on our personal and collective values, as well as the quality of our relatedness to each other. Where do we experience division within ourselves and between each other?
Venus will conjunct Pluto, bringing it into the underworld realm of the subconscious, where our conditioning resides, the archetypal energy of that which has been repressed, turned toxic, carries our shame, anger, resentments and traumas. This takes place 3 times during this period, Dec 11, 25 and March 3. The universe asks us to go deep, be honest, and to declare the values and quality of relatedness that can lead us into new levels of integration and wholeness, understanding our profound interrelatedness with all life. From December 18 through January 28 create space for inner retreat and deep reflection. What are the values that you wish to live and cultivate? This sets our navigating course throughout 2022. (see more below). This is especially highlighted because as Venus conjuncts Pluto, it transits the USA’s Pluto, a “Pluto return”, in the house of values. Our country is in the throes of defining what values will lead us into the future. (Myths that carry this theme, Inanna, Lilith, Eris, all the Dark Goddesses) (See more below)
Venus conjuncts Mars from February 28 through March 6 – 25 Capricorn through 1 Aquarius
A rare conjunction when Venus and Mars travel together for a week due to Venus’s slower movement because she is coming out of her retrograde motion. Usually they are conjunct for one day. This a potent creative time. A potential time for realigning the masculine and feminine within ourselves and to share love with another. As Venus and Mars begin their conjunction they also conjunct Pluto in Capricorn, then transit into Aquarius. Here we might imagine the importance of resolving, healing, and releasing or forgiving old relationship issues, so new orientation can take place as Venus and Mars conjunct in the first degrees of Aquarius. This can be a potent creative time as well.
Saturn square Uranus 10 – 18 Taurus/Aquarius
We continue in the tensional relationship (begun at the start of 2021) between Saturn, (structure, stability, tradition, control, constriction and master teacher) and Uranus (sudden change, rebellion, freedom, breakthrough to new ways of perceiving). While these two archetypal forces express opposing tendencies, exaggerating division, the greater effort is to embrace a broader perspective and a higher level of objective awareness to address the problems before us. The old solutions won’t work. A high tension, high conflict time, that seeks to break and disrupt old ways of doing things. The danger is throwing out the baby with the bath water.
On a personal level, we apply effort as we stabilize a center of inner resilience and calm, (Saturn) while broadening our perspectives of who we are and what’s possible. We take up the opportunity to stretch into the new (Uranus). We keep flexible in order to take up the new possibilities as they present themselves. How do we find our stability amid continuing unexpected change and instability? The Uranian rattling and shaking of all structures, forms, and systems (Saturn) can potentially support innovations and new ways of seeing that are being called for in these times of great transition. Our challenge is to know that as we walk through this landscape of extreme polarization, finding our own inner depth, connection, and stability is vital. We can then embody, communicate, and act upon our vision for the future.
Aquarius to Taurus
The idealistic community-oriented, fixed air sign of Aquarius meets self-possessed, practical, fixed earth sign, Taurus.
Saturn in Aquarius seeks to build new structures and laws to serve the community, while Uranus in Taurus shakes up our orientation to money, to our relationship with the Earth, and its resources and values. Here’s a battle between ‘we are a community, all in this together, versus a demand for freedom ‘to do what I want to do’. This is a very American dilemma. Saturn in Aquarius square Uranus in Taurus seeks to find new solutions, new definitions, new innovation to outdated systems. (see below)
Personally, we want to be flexible, curious to shifting circumstances, and sudden unexpected events, while leaning into new possibilities. We can then allow Saturn to be the master teacher, supporting effort with calm, steadiness with stability, and listening to a quiet inner wisdom. Being aware of the importance of creating healthy boundaries, scheduling and organizing, yet being flexible, and tuned into synchronicities and opportunities, integrates the opposing tendencies of the pair.
Nodes and Eclipses move into Taurus and Scorpio
Taurus North Node, (soul’s growth), Scorpio South Node, (release past tendencies)
The Nodes mark where the Eclipses will take place during the year, staying in one pair of signs for 18 months. The Eclipses are moving from the mutable Gemini/Sagittarius pair to the fixed sign pair of Taurus and Scorpio, a more powerful transformative pair that calls for commitment and perseverance in transforming ourselves and realigning with the Earth and our bodies.
This year highlights our growth by embodying earthy practical Taurus, a simplicity of being in the here and now, as compared to intense emotional Scorpio, with its tendency to be deeply involved in interpersonal dramas. With the South Node in Scorpio, we are directed to acknowledge, and in so doing, release, and heal past wounds. This allows us to embrace the Taurus North Node, of grounded embodied presence. Taurus is a Venus ruled sign, highlighting our senses, and connecting with the deeper secrets of nature. It seeks harmony, which really is a broader, inclusive knowing. The Taurus North Node, encourages us to review our monetary policies, with our focus on global capitalism and profit, our relationship with the health of the Earth and its species, and to determine what’s life sustaining and what’s non-sustainable. It asks us to reevaluate these values. (see below)
Jupiter into Pisces and Aries
Jupiter is in its own sign in Pisces, strengthening its beneficial influence. Here in Pisces is a broadening of inclusiveness, restorative after being under Saturn’s sign for 2020 to 2021. With Jupiter in Pisces until May 10, the arts, spirituality, empathy and issues around boundaries are highlighted. (see more below).
On May 10 Jupiter moves into fast moving, pioneering Aries, igniting us into action with boldness and courage. We can best take advantage of this energy when we recharge, reflect and attune to our inner self during the time Jupiter is in Pisces.
Jupiter and Saturn cycle reach new phase of development – July 2022
The Jupiter Saturn cycle marks developmental phases in our cultural, social growth. What began as a new transformational 200 year cycle in December 2020, now reaches a time where there is a strengthening of clarity and light that can lead us forward into the new cycle. This begins in July 2022, goes through August 2024. During this phase we will work to overcome inertia and dependency on past conditions that seem to hold us back. There is potential and movement in resolving divisions.
Mars retrograde in Gemini
October 30 to January 12 2023 – 25 Gemini – 8 Gemini
Mars enters Gemini – August 19, 2022 through March 25th
Mars retrogrades once every two years, therefore spending a prolonged time in one sign, instead of 2 months, it stays in the sign for 6 months, heating and activating that sign, that area of your chart. Check out where Gemini is in your chart. This area is stimulated from August 19th, then goes into a review time until it goes direct on January 12th, 2023
- Mars retrograde a time to review our action, our intentions, our desires, needs and driving forces (for more info see below)
Mercury retrogrades in Air to Earth signs – highlighting again this transitional, pivotal year (see below)
More detailed information on the Planetary Aspects for 2022
At the turn of the year, December 2021 through the end of January 2022 we are immersed in the Venus retrograde cycle, in Capricorn
December 18 2021 – January 28 2022, from 26 – 11 Capricorn – Venus retrograde
(When Venus goes retrograde it transitions from evening star, disappearing at the beginning of January 2022 to reappear around the 16th of January 2022 as morning star. In this process it resembles the myth of the descent of Inanna, the myth of Lilith, the myth of Persephone and as well as the Venus Mayan myth.)
Because Venus is going retrograde in the late degrees of Capricorn it has a very long stay in this practical Earthy sign. Instead of the usual 30 day stay in a sign, during this retrograde period, Venus is in Capricorn from November 5 to March 6th, a four month stay.
Venus conjuncts Pluto in Capricorn 3 times during this period, (December 11th, 25th and March 3, 2022) initiating a 3 part transformative process, highlighting the importance of our relationship review, the review of our values and a review of our relationship to our deepest self.
As Venus aspects Pluto it exposes issues around vulnerability, power, and control in relationship. It exposes what has been hidden and left unsaid, bringing these topics to light. Pluto always requires honesty and clarity in understanding the deeper issues at hand. Venus in Capricorn wants to know the structure, and Pluto offers a time to clarify, transform and restructure the quality of relationships, as well as the relationship we have with our deeper self. How connected are we to the deeper self? How willing are we during this time to investigate the challenges we encounter between ourselves and another, or that which causes division and pain within ourselves?
During this retrograde time and with Venus’s three conjunctions with Pluto we are asked to look at the deeper layers of our feelings as we engage with others. What is beneath the surface? What motivates our reactions? Can we find a way to heal and restore a more authentic connection? Can we bring certain issues to light in the knowledge that restoration, restructuring and transformation is possible?
- Personally, when Venus is retrograde (in your chart from 11 – 26 Capricorn) it is a time to contemplate one’s values, deepest needs, and one’s connection to the creative wellspring within (particularly in the area of your chart with Capricorn)
- with Venus conjunct Pluto, it is possible that we have the experience of the preciousness of our relations, the awareness of loss, and fragileness of life
- we are pulled inward, with the potential for deep inner reflection
- Venus retrograde is a time to review the quality of our relationships, seeing where we are rigid or controlling, reviewing the inner structure of our responses in relationship
- Through the sign Capricorn, we are attuned to the rules, what gives stability, longevity, security, and how we handle responsibility. It honors tradition, that which endures, and works best with understanding the structure of things.
- Venus retrograde initiates a time of global review, a reconsideration of what is necessary to maintain a balanced world view. Around January 16th is a vulnerable time for world leaders when political situations are unstable and possibly in flux.
- With Venus retrograde in Capricorn we review our relationship with authority and governmental structures, asking us to deepen our connection to what is valuable in systems and structures we are part of.
The Great Mutation – Jupiter Saturn conjunction into the Air element
A New Era Began December 21st, 2020 reaches its 2nd stage of development in July 2022 to August 2024
The first stage begins in the dark, (December 2020) like a seed planted in dark soil. We experience inner stirrings, new experiences, and respond in spontaneous, impulsive and instinctive ways. In the second stage (July 2022) light begins to dawn as we pull away from the past. Here we struggle with inertia and dependency of past conditions that hold us back, so to mobilize resources to move us in a forward direction.
July 2022 – Jupiter (8 Aries) and Saturn (23 Aquarius) reach semi square 2022
We begin to see new structures, technology, and social values evolve, with focus on community, social justice, equality, a restructuring of the meaning of healthcare and democracy over the next 20 and 180 years.
The meaning of the Great Mutation
Since 1870 these two giant planets, Jupiter and Saturn, have conjuncted every 20 years in Earth signs. In the Earth signs the focus was on the mundane world, on the organization of it, and practical implementation through economic development, the development of humanity’s use of the earth as a source of wealth, and the development of capitalism and industry.
With the Great Mutation of 2020 we refocus our priorities, moving into an era of Air Signs. The Air signs highlight the mind, ideas and communication, valuing creative and intellectual endeavors, original and innovative ideas, and the free exchange of information. The development of humanity will move toward a new understanding of community, the interrelatedness of everyone and everything, and the development of a consciousness of social justice. There is now support for group purpose to create new infrastructures and governing possibilities, new moral and philosophical codes of living for humanity, and the profoundly interrelated systems of life here on and around planet Earth. 2022, Jupiter moves into Pisces and Aries while Saturn stays in Aquarius.
With the 2nd phase of this cycle, beginning July 2022, topics begin to clarify, vision of where we are going find more definition. We continue the struggle to overcome the conditioning and programming of the past, but with more clarity of the road ahead. In June of 2023 we reach a time of visionary possibilities being supported, especially if we can hold the vision steady and be open to timing. We are in this phase until August 19 2024 when we enter the 3rd stage, taking direct action, clearing away old structures, actively building new ones in order to embody the new purpose.
Shadow qualities of the Aquarius.
We can see that we are already dealing with these ‘shadow’ issues, the challenges of sharing information and our different interpretations of “truth”, what is true, what is fact. We see the growth of new industry that has developed away from earth as resource for profit, to a data economy that fuels great profits. We see it in the growth of genetic engineering and innovation without the consciousness of its repercussions.
The sign, Aquarius, carries an interesting polarity of desiring more freedom, freedom of expression in all areas, including gender expression, artistic expression, and individual expression. And yet, it is also the sign of the community, of something that is greater that the individual, about collaboration and visionary possibilities. Here is the challenge and struggle between free speech and censorship, the power of the social media, where it needs parameters in how it is affecting the collective culture and how it affects youth. It sets the stage for a growth of collective awareness and consciousness to move into a more evolved state of being. We see the growth of movements and teachings around mindfulness, meditation, and the healing of trauma. We see the younger generations more open to differences and more aware of our interrelatedness with each other, the Earth, and all living beings
Saturn in Aquarius (2020 through March 2023)
In 2022 Saturn occupies 11-25 Aquarius, 18-25 Aquarius retrograde
Saturn entered Aquarius on March 22nd, 2020, for 3 months, dipped back into Capricorn, returning to Aquarius fully on December 16th, 2020. It was last in Aquarius from February 1991 through January 1994.
- Look to see where Aquarius is in your chart to know what is being activated by Saturn this year. If you find yourself struggling, slow down, and a thoughtfully organize and plan your forward movement.
- Saturn limits, focuses, and concentrates one’s experience in the sign it occupies. It builds boundaries to help us know our clear definitions.
- Saturn teaches us through our experience. Saturn builds stability and creates focus for our intention.
- It cultivates what we align with as the “voice of authority”. The ideal being our maturity, experience and inner intuitive wisdom that guides us
- As Saturn enters Aquarius it focuses us to create new forms of how we relate to each other in community, and in the global community as well. We see this taking place as virtual forms of communication and community quickly take on reality.
- Saturn in Aquarius redefines what is meaningful to us as a community. It builds new foundations for community. It asks for new structures to be put in place that recognize our interrelatedness. It applies pressure to the status quo, giving form to the clear intelligent sight and the visionary possibilities of Aquarius.
- Shadow side of Saturn in Aquarius is state censorship, and control, restrictive laws put in place, rigidity in intellectual systems, mind detached from feeling. Personally, we experience the shadow side when we feel limited, and lack confidence. Saturn’s wisdom is challenging us to confront old behaviors and beliefs.
Saturn square Uranus, Aquarius/Taurus in 2022

Eclipses, Mercury Retrograde and Mars Retrograde times
Mercury retrogrades in Air to Earth signs – highlighting again this transitional, pivotal year
Jan 14 – Feb 3, 10 Aquarius to 24 Capricorn
May 10 – Jun 3, 24 Gemini – 26 Taurus
Sep 9 – Oct 3, 8 Libra – 24 Virgo
Dec 29 – Jan18, 24 – 8 Capricorn
Mercury is the planet of the mind; how we form our thoughts and perceptions, how we communicate and connect mentally with others.
- Every year Mercury retrogrades 3 times, representing the need we all have to periodically retreat, go inward, and reconnect at deeper levels.
- It is a time for review, for fine-tuning our projects, for slowing down.
- We can expect delays, schedules or technology to stall, all with a drive to attain a natural rhythm that periodically calls us inward to reflect and review.
- Each year Mercury retrogrades in a different element. Some years it straddles two elements. In 2022 it retrogrades from air to earth signs.
- With Mercury retrograding through air to earth signs, we review the patterns in our thinking and relationship and how we can give form, grounding, and structure to our ideas.
- Mercury retrograde marks a time to reflect on how clear our communication is, how we take in information and process it, how we bring it into practical form, and how to simplify more abstract thoughts. During the retrograde we can refine our responses to life and to others by cultivating greater insights into our habitual reactions.
Eclipses and the Nodes in 2022
Eclipses take place in pairs when the Earth, Moon and Sun are in exact alignment. A Solar Eclipse takes place at New Moon. A Lunar Eclipse takes place at the Full Moon. 6 Months later another pair of eclipses takes place. The Eclipses take place close to the “Nodes”. Nodes simply represent that point in space where total eclipses will take place, this perfect alignment of Sun, Moon, Earth.
Eclipses intensify the energy of the times, often exposing issues that has been hidden as it aligns with a person’s or country’s chart. They are like super full and new moons.
Beginning in January the north node moves into Taurus and the south node into Scorpio. Each nodal axis highlights two signs that are opposite each other. In January, the nodes move from Gemini/Sagittarius axis to the Taurus/Scorpio, where they will highlight this pair of signs for 18 months. Last time we had the nodes in Taurus/Scorpio was April 2003 – December 2004
The movement of the Nodes and Eclipses from the outgoing (yang or masculine) mutable signs to the inward (yin or feminine signs) fixed signs is a marked difference in energy. The North Node in Taurus means it is best to lean into this earthy sign’s qualities; honoring nature, being grounded, simplifying, being fully present and embodied in each moment. The South Node defines what needs to be released and in Scorpio what needs healing. We investigate and release Scorpio qualities, deep complex feelings, places that have been hidden, where there is trauma, and where there is emotional drama. The more we embody the Taurian energy, of aligning in a steady and persevering way with nature and simple presence, the more we activate Scorpio’s gift of transformation, renewal and authentic intimacy. This is what is called for during this 18 month time period.
April 30 – Solar Eclipse 10 Taurus, May 16 – Lunar Eclipse, 25 Scorpio/Taurus
October 25 – Solar Eclipse, 2 Scorpio, November 8 – Lunar Eclipse, 16 Taurus/Scorpio
Mars retrograde in Gemini
October 30 to January 12 2023 – 25 Gemini – 8 Gemini
Mars enters Gemini – August 19, 2022 through March 25th, 2023
Mars retrogrades once every two years, therefore spending a prolonged time in one sign, instead of 2 months, it stays in the sign for 6 months, heating and activating that sign, that area of your chart. Check out where Gemini is in your chart. This area is stimulated from August 19th, then goes into a review time until it goes direct on January 12th, 2023
- Mars retrograde a time to review our action, our intentions, our desires, needs and driving forces
- Mars retrograde in Gemini calls for practically reviewing how we communicate, use our words and investigate the hidden intentions in our choice and delivery of words.
- Providing greater consciousness while communicating. Check out ‘Nonviolent Communication, NVC’.
- Not a good time to initiate new projects, take bold actions or have electional surgery
- Good time to review what projects have been started
Placement of outer planets in 2022
Neptune in Pisces, (2011 to 2025), in 2022 – 20 to 25 Pisces,
Neptune in Pisces can bring more attunement to the many dimensions in which we live, moving beyond identifying only with the physical into the spiritual and imaginative dimensions. People are able to break out of roles that have for so long held us in place and dictated how we could be with each other. (i.e. gay marriage, gender identity) The oceans, music, the arts, spirituality, imagination, and meditation will all increase in concern and focus. (Note, the mindfulness meditation movement) The arts, music, and sound, and their role in healing will be accentuated. Prison and hospital reform will be up for us. Issues with refugees and large movements of people across borders will come to the forefront. Neptune in Pisces assists in dissolving the old paradigm. It can activate the powers of our imagination so to support breaking out of old paradigms and belief systems that limit us. What we can imagine we can create. The shadow side of Neptune in Pisces is an increase in verbal spin, manipulation through deception and propaganda, increase in denial and escapism through drugs and alcohol. The challenge: we can feel overwhelmed as the increase in emotional sensitivity takes place as open as we are to the collective emotional field. It can be very disorientating and confusing, stimulating emotional responses of victimization. So when Neptune travels through Pisces, meditation, contemplation, coming to inner stillness and utilizing our poetic imagination all promote connection to more inclusive dimensions of consciousness.
Pluto now in Capricorn (2008 to 2024), in 2022 – 25 to 28 Capricorn
The last time Pluto entered Capricorn was in 1762-1778. Pluto in Capricorn breaks down and restructures governing systems, bureaucracies, old power structures, economies, and brings to the surface issues of authority and control that can no longer be of service to the evolution of humanity. Pluto in Capricorn intensifies power struggles, and the old systems of oppression, while at the same time bringing about destruction and catharsis to those systems. This described the end of British rule and the will and power to shape the Constitution. With Pluto, once again, in Capricorn, the transformative forces around governments return. Pluto brings to the surface what has been hidden and repressed in terms of these systems, especially repressed contents and wounds in the deep foundations of nations, people and social dynamics. (The forming of the USA constitution took place with Pluto in Capricorn.)
Personally, when touched by Pluto in Capricorn, we make a descent into the deep inner realm of the soul. Here we experience what has been exiled from our consciousness yet is in our body’s cellular memory. It brings catharsis and rebirth, potentially healing trauma, and illuminating the unconscious preexisting identity patterns and stories. This brings about reclaiming a vital part of the self that had been loss and is now reunited.
Chiron in Aries (April 2018 – April 2027) in 2022 – 8 to 16 Aries
Chiron in Aries brings to the surface for healing and acknowledgment aggressive, reactive, even violent tendencies with the potential for deepening attunement to our intuitive and courageous self. Here we are healing the orientation to blame that develops from polarizing, and with Aries need to win and dominate. We are learning to listen, healing and supporting our spirit, our courage, and the power to stand and act with faith, not knowing future outcomes. We accomplish new levels of integration by intentions in alignment with the higher good, courage to act and be our authentic selves. The USA has Chiron in Aries. As Chiron moves through Aries it triggers the USA’s buried wounds from our very beginning, and formation of our country. It brings these to the surface for healing and new levels of integration. Chiron in the USA chart has been triggered since 2015, with transiting Uranus conjunct Chiron, then transiting Pluto squared Chiron through 2018, with Saturn joining the square in 2019. Jupiter transiting Chiron through 2020. This is in lead up to the USA Pluto return, where the USA must redefine our values for our country, the meaning of democracy, and who we shall be going forward.
