When I fell in love with the Stars

When I was 19 years old, I got a job in the high country of Yosemite National Park. I worked at Glen Aulin High Sierra camp on the Tuolumne River, at the top edge of the Tuolumne Grand Canyon. We worked everyday for 2 1/2 months without leaving the park. It was there I fell in love with the Stars. A man on the Trail Crew, who was stationed a mile below us, in the beginning of the Grand Canyon, taught me the constellations.
Some nights, I would ride out horseback and sit with the wrangler after we released the horses in the lower meadow for the night, and just watch the starry heavens, feeling the streams of light from the falling stars.
When I returned to Santa Cruz and school after that first summer, I began to study astrology.
I returned 5 more summers, working in the different High Sierra Camps. The high country, stony granite mountains and the starry nights became my real home.
I am sharing this video from the Yosemite Conservancy on the night skies that so drew me in to the mystery in which we live.

January 1, 2025 at 9:14 pmThank you for posting this beautiful video. Growing up in Spokane, I took the Milky Way for granted. Now it’s been many years since I’ve seen it. Even in Big Sur, the often clouded sky doesn’t allow seeing it. This video brought memories and deep longing. Much appreciated.

I have never been to Yosemite. And have never seen stars like this.
I am inspired to make the journey – a pilgrimage – to the stars in Yosemite.
Thank you for sharing, Sue. I am touched by your experience, one that has impacted and empowered so many.
